Welcome to my website which I am updating from 2024 to build on the work that I have been doing over the years since its publication in 2016. This mini site describes the highlights of my work on Selfless Leadership. I host a detailed Knowledge Hub at the sister site Selfless Leader.org. The aim of both this mini site and my main Knowledge Hub site, is to support the development of leadership approaches and tools and techniques as part of collective leadership

Stephen is a senior practitioner in public leadership with 38 years of practitioner experience, which includes the military, the UK police service, and regional and central Government. The last 18 years have been spent as an academic at the University of Manchester. Stephen is internationally renowned in the field of leadership. With a total of 50 year’s experience, he describes himself as a ‘pracademic’, holding expertise in both theory and practice of leadership, organisational development and negotiation skills. He delivers a unique perspective of consulting, research, facilitating and coaching for application across a wide range of public sector and corporate disciplines. He was promoted to Reader (Associate Professor) in 2020 and now holds an Honorary Position for the same role alongside his consultancy and freelance executive education role.

An overview of Stephen's recent career and achievements

He has comprehensive experience in research, teaching and leadership development. His approach has been to apply personal experience and research to teaching and leadership practice. Responsibilities have included designing and directing several Master’ level programmes and modules aimed at senior leaders and managers in both the public and private sectors. Examples include a Master of Science (MSc) in Healthcare Leadership (the UK National Health Service), an MSc in International Healthcare Leadership (IHL), and a Negotiations Skills module for the Global MBA ( both delivered in South East Asia, China and the Middle East).

Publications

Publishing widely, he has co-edited two books. The first, 'The New Public Leadership Challenge' (2016), was published by Palgrave Macmillan which he co-edited with Kieth Grint. The second,Trust and Confidence in Public Services and Government, co-edited with Sue Llewellyn and Ann Mahon, was published by Routledge in 2013.

Stephen has sole edited a third, published in 2023: The International Research Handbook on Leading in the Public Interest: Re-imagining Public Leadership in a Post-Pandemic Paradigm is published by Edward Elgar. His first sole-authored book ‘Selfless Leader’, published by Palgrave Macmillan in February, 2016. was published in January 2016. The Selfless Leader focuses on the importance of collective leadership and its application in practice. He is now working on his second sole-authored book, which will specifically address how leadership is practised and a third planned on ‘Goal-Directed Negotiation’. Compass Leadership Limited was formed in 2009 to support his research and consultancy concerning leadership development, alongside his work as a full-time faculty member at the University of Manchester. Stephen regularly delivers international leadership and organisational development programmes to senior managers from various organisations. This includes extensive teaching and consultancy in Scandinavia, Europe, South East Asia, China, the Middle East, the US and South America. In the last 3 years, particularly 2023, he has been awarded several commissions in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Research and Practice

Research and applied practice interests have focused on collective leadership and governance, decision-making, systems approaches and negotiation. Specific research identified the impact of performance regimes on public sector organisations and the potential to create and demonstrate public value.

Honours

In 2002, he was awarded the Queens Police Medal (QPM) by HM Queen for Distinguished Police Service (HM Queen Jubilee Birthday Honours 2002, Buckingham Palace).
